Συμμερίζομαι και κατανοώ το δράμα  του Μεταξά τότε ,του  ΄Αδωνη, του Πλεύρη και του Βορίδη στις μέρες μας. / I share and understand the drama of Metaxas back then, and of Adonis, Plevris, and Voridis in our days.

October 28th, 1940 . The drama of choice for a Greek fascist or Neo-Nazi is understandable. On one hand, the homeland; on the other, the ideology. At the very least, tomorrow you cannot be both a fascist and a Greek. “You cannot carry two watermelons under one arm.” It is the people’s “No” to Mussolini’s fascist demand that we are celebrating.
It is certain that the dictator Metaxas faced the exact same drama back then—the teacher of his contemporary ideological peers in today’s Mitsotakis government. A difficult decision. Whom to stand with, and whom to leave behind.
This is the exact reason why he did not reply in plain, straight-talking Greek with a simple YES or NO to the Italian ambassador Grazzi in the early hours of October 28, 1940, when he was handed the ultimatum. He preferred to slip away… “French-style,” using the ancient Greek ambiguity of Pythia, which in the older language of diplomacy translates to the phrase: “Alors, c’est la guerre!” (“Well, this means war!”). In the relentless interpretation of history, it also means: “Well, this is the end of the ‘honeymoon’ with the then-dictator’s beloved gurus, Hitler and Mussolini.”
