France. “From early in the morning, protests and scattered actions were taking place across France, on a day of nationwide mobilization against the high cost of living and the weakening of the social model aimed at ensuring a basic level of opportunities and social protection. High school students, farmers, climate activists, and members of the ‘Yellow Vests’ joined forces in a multifaceted protest movement, with authorities expressing fears of violent incidents, about six months before the presidential elections.
The following ‘school poem’ is dedicated to Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Where Pasha, Turks, Arvanites, and Liapides are the Prime Minister, the government, the hangers-on, and his blue locust. And where Despoina is Georgaina, the great, popular tsunami that is approaching.
________
A heavy din is heard; many shots ring out.
Shots are fired at weddings, but never at funerals—
yet here, in neither wedding nor mourning,
Despo fights alongside her daughters-in-law and grandchildren.
The Albanians have encircled her in the tower of Dimoulas.
“Georgaina, cast down your arms; Souli is no more.
Here, you are a slave to the Pasha—a slave to the Albanians.”
And though Souli has submitted, and though Kiafa has fallen to the Turks,
Despo has not—nor will she ever—accept the Liapides as her masters.
With a torch in her hand, she calls out to her daughters and daughters-in-law:
“We shall not live as slaves to the Turks; children, come with me!” And they lit the fuses, and all were consumed by fire.
