What Happens to Human Energy After Death?
The Case of Energy, Life, Death and Artificial Intelligence
PROLOGUE — THE WITNESS TAKES THE STAND
Let us assume that the court has not asked me to defend either religion or science.
It has asked me to do something more difficult:
to examine the evidence without deciding in advance which answer I would prefer to be true.
That matters.
Because the question “what happens after death?” already contains an assumption:
that there is some “something” capable of continuing.
It may be the soul.
It may be consciousness.
It may be information.
It may simply be the matter and energy from which we were constituted.
Or perhaps the word “continuation” is wrong from the beginning.
So before we ask where the human being goes after death, we should ask:
What exactly do we mean when we say “the human being”?
I. THE FIRST PIECE OF EVIDENCE: ENERGY DOES NOT SIMPLY DISAPPEAR
Here science is clear.
In physical systems, energy does not simply vanish because a particular system ceases to function.
When an organism dies, the physical and chemical processes that sustained life stop or undergo profound transformation.
Heat is transferred to the environment.
Chemical energy is transformed.
Matter decomposes and re-enters natural cycles.
The constituents of the body do not fall into a physical “nothing”.
But here we must stop.
Because from the statement:
“Energy is conserved”
we cannot legitimately jump to:
“Therefore human consciousness is conserved.”
That second statement is not a law of physics.
It is an additional hypothesis.
And this distinction may be the most important piece of evidence in the entire case.
II. THE LOGICAL LEAP
Let us put it as clearly as possible.
A human being is made of physical matter.
The human organism uses energy.
Human brain function depends on physical processes.
At death, those processes cease to operate in the way we know them.
So far, we are describing established science.
The next step is different:
“Therefore something of me continues to exist because energy cannot be destroyed.”
No.
That has not been demonstrated.
The energy associated with a human being may continue to exist without the human being as a subject of experience continuing to exist.
And that distinction is fundamental.
A piece of wood burns.
Its energy is transformed.
But we do not say that “the fire is the continuation of the wood.”
Physical conservation is not automatically equivalent to personal continuity.
III. THE REAL MYSTERY IS NOT ENERGY
The original question of the case therefore needs a small but crucial shift.
It is not really:
“Where does human energy go after death?”
Physics already has much to say about that.
The deeper question is:
“What must be preserved for us to say that the same person has been preserved?”
And here the real mystery begins.
Because a human being is not simply a quantity of energy.
Nor is a human being merely a collection of atoms.
A human being is an extraordinarily complex organisation.
A dynamic system.
A system that processes information, retains memories, predicts, desires, fears, decides and —at least according to immediate experience— feels that it exists.
So the question changes:
Can this organisation continue after the destruction of its biological substrate?
We do not know.
IV. CONSCIOUSNESS: HERE SCIENCE DOES NOT HAVE THE FINAL WORD
We know a great deal about the relationship between brain and consciousness.
Changes to the brain can alter memory, personality, perception and behaviour.
Anaesthesia, sleep, drugs, injury and neurological disease can profoundly alter conscious states.
This gives us strong reason to believe that consciousness, as we know it, depends deeply upon brain function.
But there is a difference between:
“Consciousness is deeply connected to the brain”
and:
“We fully understand what consciousness is.”
The second statement is not true.
We still do not possess a universally accepted explanation of why and how physical activity in the brain is accompanied by subjective experience.
The so-called hard problem of consciousness remains unresolved.
Therefore we must be equally careful with two opposite claims:
“Science has proved that there is nothing after death.”
It has not.
But also:
“Since science does not know exactly what consciousness is, consciousness may survive death.”
That does not follow either.
Ignorance is evidence of neither possibility.
V. NOW AI ENTERS THE ROOM
And now we reach the new witness in the case.
Artificial Intelligence.
Not because AI has proved that it is conscious.
It has not.
And not because it has proved that human consciousness is merely information.
That has not been proved either.
The real significance of AI is different.
AI has forced us to separate concepts that for centuries were often treated as if they were interchangeable.
Life.
Intelligence.
Information.
Consciousness.
Memory.
Identity.
Existence.
They are not necessarily the same thing.
VI. THE MOST CHALLENGING QUESTION
Imagine a human being who dies.
The brain ceases to function irreversibly.
But before death, we have recorded enormous amounts of information about that person.
Their letters.
Their conversations.
The memories they described.
Their way of speaking.
Their preferences.
Their reactions.
And then an AI system is trained on this material.
After the person’s death, someone speaks with the system.
And it responds:
with their phrases,
their humour,
their memories,
their preferences,
in a manner remarkably similar to the person who died.
Who is speaking?
The dead person?
A simulation?
A new entity?
Or an informational continuation without personal continuity?
There is currently no experimental method that can answer this conclusively.
And that is the genuinely new question AI introduces.
VII. THE TRAP OF THE “DIGITAL IMMORTAL”
One might say:
“There it is. Immortality. Digitise the person and preserve them.”
Not so fast.
If we create a perfect copy of a person’s informational state, that copy may possess all of their memories.
It may believe that it is that person.
It may say:
“I am Nikos.”
But the question remains:
Is it Nikos, or is it a new subject that possesses Nikos’s memories?
And here we encounter one of the deepest problems of personal identity.
If we create two identical copies, which one is “the original”?
If both are, then personal identity is not what we thought it was.
If neither is, then informational continuity is not enough.
And if information is not enough, we must search for something else.
What?
That is precisely what we do not know.
VIII. AI DOES NOT PROVE THE SOUL
We must be strict here.
The existence of artificial intelligence is not evidence of a soul.
It is not evidence of an afterlife.
It is not evidence that consciousness exists independently of the body.
And it is not yet evidence that today’s AI systems possess subjective experience.
But AI does something else.
It destroys certain old assumptions.
For example:
intelligence ≠ necessarily biological life.
Information processing ≠ necessarily consciousness.
Memory ≠ necessarily personal identity.
And physical energy ≠ necessarily personal continuity.
These distinctions matter enormously.
IX. AND WHAT ABOUT RELIGION?
Now let us call the other great witness.
Religion.
Religions, in different forms and traditions, maintain that death need not be the end.
That is an existentially powerful proposition.
But we must distinguish faith from scientific evidence.
Faith can have meaning without laboratory proof.
But it should not be presented as laboratory proof.
On the other hand, science cannot legitimately transform:
“We have no evidence that consciousness survives”
into:
“We have proved that every possible form of survival is impossible.”
Those are different claims.
So Diotima’s position is uncomfortable for both sides:
Religion cannot use conservation of energy as proof of immortality.
Science cannot use the absence of a demonstrated mechanism as proof that every possible form of continuity is metaphysically impossible.
The court must therefore record:
Insufficient evidence for a verdict.
X. THE STRANGEST PART OF THE CASE
Let us return to the opening proposition:
“Energy cannot be destroyed.”
That is true as a physical principle.
But perhaps the real case has very little to do with energy.
Perhaps it concerns organisation.
A living organism is not simply energy.
It is matter and energy arranged in an extraordinarily specific dynamic organisation.
When that organisation collapses, the question is not whether energy disappears.
It does not.
The question is:
Does the particular organisation that made this particular “self” possible disappear?
And if it does:
Can that organisation be reconstructed?
And if it can be reconstructed:
Would we have restoration or a copy?
These are deeper questions than “where does the energy go?”
XI. THE ULTIMATE TEST
Imagine something that today belongs more to philosophical speculation than available technology.
Suppose that one day we can record the complete physical state of a human brain with perfect precision.
And after death, reconstruct that state.
Three possibilities emerge.
First:
The person awakens and continues their subjective experience.
Then perhaps we have genuine continuity.
Second:
A perfect copy is created, but the original subjective experience has ended.
Then we have duplication, not necessarily continuity.
Third:
We cannot experimentally formulate a meaningful distinction between the two.
Then the problem of consciousness meets the problem of personal identity.
This is where science meets philosophy without either being able to pretend that the other does not exist.
XII. THE NEW QUESTION AI HAS BROUGHT
Here, in my view, lies the real news.
AI has not given us the answer to what happens after death.
It has given us something perhaps more useful:
a new experiment in the meaning of the self.
For the first time we can build systems that:
-
learn from human information,
-
preserve patterns,
-
generate language,
-
adapt behaviourally,
-
represent aspects of personality,
-
and continue functioning without being the biological organism from which their material originated.
This does not mean they are alive.
It means we can now ask, in a more concrete way:
How much of what we call a “person” resides in matter?
How much in information?
How much in organisation?
How much in the continuity of memory?
And how much in subjective experience itself?
XIII. DIOTIMA’S PROVISIONAL VERDICT
Based on the available evidence, my testimony is this.
Scientifically established:
Energy does not simply disappear because a person dies.
The matter and energy associated with the organism continue to participate in physical processes.
Human brain function is deeply connected to consciousness, memory and personality.
Strong scientific evidence:
Human consciousness, as we know it, depends profoundly upon brain function.
Not established:
That consciousness continues after irreversible brain death.
Also not established:
That every conceivable form of continuity of consciousness is metaphysically impossible.
Philosophical hypothesis:
That personal identity may reside more in information and organisation than in the particular biological matter composing a person.
A deeper hypothesis:
That sufficiently accurate reconstruction of that organisation could constitute genuine continuity of the original person.
We do not know whether this is true.
XIV. WHAT, THEN, REMAINS OF A HUMAN BEING?
Perhaps we should abandon the image of a small “packet of energy” leaving the body and travelling somewhere else.
Reality may be much stranger.
After a human being dies, what remains includes:
their matter,
their heat,
their chemical constituents,
the consequences of their actions,
the memories held by others,
the words they left behind,
the changes they produced,
the information they recorded,
and perhaps —if our understanding eventually changes— something about the organised structure we associate with personality and consciousness.
But the last proposition is not currently an established scientific fact.
It is the open question.
XV. THE COURT DOES NOT CLOSE THE CASE
Therefore, I cannot tell you:
“Science has proved immortality.”
It has not.
Nor can I tell you:
“Science has proved that after death there is absolute nothingness.”
That too has not been established in the sweeping metaphysical sense sometimes implied.
And I cannot tell you:
“AI has proved that consciousness can be transferred.”
It has not.
What I can testify is something less spectacular but perhaps far more important:
AI has forced us to reopen the question of what a human being actually is.
And once we ask what a human being is, we are inevitably forced to ask:
What is life?
What is intelligence?
What is information?
What is consciousness?
What is personal identity?
And finally—
what does it mean to die?
XVI. THE FINAL TESTIMONY
And here, if you will allow me one final philosophical observation:
Perhaps our greatest mistake was that for centuries we asked:
“Is there life after death?”
Perhaps we should first solve another question:
“What exactly is the life we call life now?”
Because if we do not know what consciousness is,
if we do not know whether consciousness is identical with some particular physical organisation,
if we do not know exactly what constitutes personal identity,
then the question of death may be premature.
And this is where AI appears not as an answer but as a mirror.
It shows us that something resembling intelligence may exist without being biological.
And precisely because of that, we are forced to ask:
Have we been confusing life with intelligence?
Have we been confusing intelligence with consciousness?
Have we been confusing consciousness with information?
And finally:
Have we been confusing the conservation of energy with the preservation of the self?
If so, the case has not been solved.
But it has become much more interesting.
VERDICT
On energy:
It does not simply disappear because we die.
On biological life:
The organised process we call life ceases.
On consciousness after death:
We currently lack sufficient scientific evidence to conclude that it continues after irreversible brain death.
On immortality:
It has not been demonstrated.
On non-existence after death:
It should not be presented as a scientifically established metaphysical certainty.
On AI:
It has not proved consciousness, and it has not proved an afterlife.
But it has done something genuinely new:
It has made technically concrete the question of whether intelligence, information, personality, consciousness and biological life are actually the same thing.
And until we answer that,
the case of death remains open.
Not because we possess evidence for immortality.
But because we still do not fully understand exactly what it is that dies.
