Surely, the pages do not fill themselves so easily.
The daily anxiety in the marketplace of news.
Over the last two or three days, I counted nearly forty references across three tabloid outlets of misinformation and mass distraction devoted to the deceased celebrity.
The “empty baskets” of Goebbelsland versus the “full ones.” Two entirely different and opposing worlds.
“You Leave with Your Basket Full”
(From the poetry collection of Nikos Paschalinos, “Mother, Curly Basil”)
They did not dedicate an obituary to you,
the merchants of news.
You were not a grand dignitary.
Humble and anonymous among the crowd.
The same now, in your death today.
A shining star was your path
through the grim nights of life.
Among us, first and exceptional,
even though you despised the “excellent,”
the self-important.
Yet you were truly noble and great.
You were fortunate — and proud in your modesty —
to depart
with your basket full.
— Absent from the funerals of the “great”
— Mourner for Pylos and Tempi
— Grandson of an exile of Makronisos
— Conscientious objector
— Soldier under the commands of Nature
Such titles of honor, your friends
engraved upon your urn.
Lightly we laid you to rest
in the mysterious waters of the Euboean Gulf.
A traveler, as your whole life had been.
You never say “farewell forever” to the living.
“A good cosmic reunion,”
our wish to you, brother.
