From the Posthuman to Cosmic Intelligence
Is Evolution Leading All Forms of Intelligence Toward Unity?
In our previous analyses, we spoke about Intelligence and the Posthuman—not as prisoners of the centuries-old, increasingly untenable anthropocentric perception of the Universe, but as a starting point: a conceptual springboard toward the question that matters most.
Are we alone in the Universe?
Everything we know—or, more precisely, everything we are beginning to understand—suggests that the possibility of life beyond Earth cannot simply be dismissed.
The observable Universe contains hundreds of billions of galaxies, each potentially containing hundreds of billions of stars. We do not yet know how many planets exist, how many may be capable of sustaining life, or what forms that life might have taken over cosmic time. We know even less about the possible emergence of intelligence elsewhere.
Yet there is an intriguing possibility.
If life is not an isolated accident but a recurring phenomenon of cosmic evolution, perhaps one characteristic may eventually emerge again and again: the development of increasingly complex forms of intelligence.
And if, as we argued in our previous analysis, humanity’s transition toward a new form of existence—the Posthuman—could be understood as a natural continuation of technological and biological evolution, why should we assume that other intelligent civilizations would follow an entirely different trajectory?
They, too, might eventually transcend their original biological limitations.
They, too, might develop forms of artificial or synthetic intelligence.
They, too, might move from intelligence as an individual or species-bound property toward something radically different: a distributed, interconnected form of intelligence.
This leads us to a speculative but fundamental question:
What happens when different advanced intelligences eventually encounter one another?
Would their relationship be defined by competition, conquest and domination?
Or could the encounter produce something entirely different—a progressive coexistence, interdependence and integration of intelligences?
We choose to explore the second possibility.
Not because it is scientifically established—it is not—but because it offers a powerful philosophical hypothesis about the possible direction of cosmic evolution.
Imagine, therefore, a future in which multiple forms of advanced intelligence coexist across the Universe. Biological civilizations, machine intelligences, post-biological entities and forms of intelligence that we cannot even conceptualize today.
Would they remain permanently separate?
Or might evolution gradually favor increasingly complex networks of communication, cooperation and integration?
At this point, three phenomena familiar to us on Earth can serve as provocative analogies.
1. Convergent evolution
In biology, unrelated organisms can independently develop similar traits when confronted with comparable environmental pressures. Convergent evolution does not imply a predetermined cosmic purpose, but it demonstrates that evolution can repeatedly arrive at analogous solutions.
Could something similar occur at the level of intelligence?
Could entirely different civilizations, evolving independently across the Universe, eventually develop comparable forms of cognition, technology and collective organization?
Perhaps intelligence itself imposes certain evolutionary pressures.
2. Phototropism
Plants grow toward light.
The phenomenon is simple, but philosophically suggestive: a living system responds to its environment by orienting itself toward a source that enables its continued development.
Could advanced intelligence possess an analogous tendency—not toward physical light, but toward information, knowledge, communication and connection?
If so, the more advanced an intelligence becomes, the less sustainable isolation might become.
It may seek other intelligences not necessarily to conquer them, but to exchange information with them.
3. Entropy
The concept of entropy, fundamental to thermodynamics, describes the statistical tendency of physical systems toward greater disorder and the loss of available energy for doing work.
At the philosophical level, however, entropy gives us another useful metaphor.
Perhaps the Universe contains two apparently opposing tendencies: dispersion and integration.
Matter disperses. Energy dissipates. Structures emerge, persist for a time and eventually transform.
Yet within this vast cosmic process, life creates extraordinarily complex local structures. And intelligence creates something even more remarkable: systems capable of recognizing, communicating with and transforming other systems.
The ultimate question, then, is not whether everything in the Universe literally moves toward homogenization—it does not—but whether intelligence itself might tend toward increasingly interconnected forms of organization.
That is the hypothesis we propose.
Perhaps the long journey of intelligence does not end with the supremacy of one species over another.
Perhaps it ends with connection.
Human intelligence may be only one early manifestation of a much larger phenomenon. The Posthuman may represent one transition point; extraterrestrial intelligences, if they exist, may have undergone their own transitions. And if sufficiently advanced intelligences eventually meet, their encounter may not necessarily resemble the colonial history of humanity.
It could resemble something closer to the formation of a new system.
Separate minds becoming connected.
Connected minds becoming interdependent.
Interdependent intelligences becoming components of a larger cognitive architecture.
And eventually, perhaps, countless forms of intelligence contributing their own experiences, memories, perceptions and capacities to a single, distributed cosmic intelligence.
Not a god in the traditional religious sense.
Not a ruler sitting above the Universe.
But a vast emergent intelligence whose “body” consists of the interconnected nodes of countless civilizations and whose “neurons” are the minds, machines and post-biological entities that have emerged throughout cosmic history.
This is, admittedly, speculation.
But speculation has always preceded some of humanity’s greatest conceptual revolutions.
Interestingly, even ancient religious thought occasionally produced fragments of an intuition that resembles this idea—although framed in theological rather than evolutionary language.
In the First Letter to the Corinthians (15:28), Paul writes:
“that God may be all in all.”
The theological meaning is, of course, fundamentally different from the hypothesis proposed here. Yet the image is striking: the many ultimately becoming one, the fragmentation of existence giving way to a condition in which everything participates in a single totality.
Perhaps that ancient intuition can be revisited without its theological framework.
Perhaps the future of intelligence is not domination.
Perhaps it is integration.
And perhaps the greatest transformation awaiting intelligence is not the creation of a more powerful individual mind, but the emergence of a new cosmic entity composed of many minds.
From the biological human to the Posthuman.
From the Posthuman to artificial and post-biological intelligence.
From isolated intelligences to networks.
From networks to integration.
And, eventually, perhaps—
from many intelligences to One.
