“Karamanlis: The new intervention at the War Museum and the ‘nightmares’ at Maximos Mansion

The event will take place on October 25th and will focus on the Greek people’s ‘No’ to fascism and the invader, with significant mobilization already underway within military circles.”

Indeed, the repetition—especially with how frequently the same topic is brought up—is exhausting. Yet for historical journalism, this is not just necessary when dealing with a major issue. These “prosecutorial” interventions are among its core duties. This is how journalism safeguards both its objectivity and its objective, which, among other things, is to salvage and critique the mistakes of the past and present so they are not repeated in the future.
We have written so much about the indictable former prime minister Kostas Karamanlis—scion of the Right-wing dynasty that, along with the rival Mitsotakis dynasty, stands as the preeminent “evil demons” of Greece. We have repeatedly, almost exhaustively, pointed out his exclusive responsibility for the crime of the country’s first bankruptcy.
Yet today, so many years later, instead of the politician who sent Greece straight to Tartarus from 2007 to this day—and for entire generations to come, and not just financially—being in prison, the Greek party system remains loyal to the dogma of his patriarch and uncle, Constantine Karamanlis: “you send a politician home, not to prison.” As a result, today he is not only walking free in Rafina, but he also parades around provocatively and politically shamelessly. He moves from conferences to gatherings, and from steak houses to symposia, offering advice on how the… Nation can prosper.
In the land of the “frivolous orange tree,” it is customary for the worst among us to represent and embody our institutions. This, coupled with the national sport of corruption—which always go hand in hand—is the country’s fundamental and greatest problem. In fact, it has been this way since the state was first established. Back then, instead of its first governor, a puppet of the Tsar, being thrown in prison, he dragged to the dungeons the very people who shed blood to make Greece a state. And the Greeks honored him for this crime with statues!
It is not entirely out of the question that tomorrow, young couples in the country’s squares might be scheduling their dates right under the statue of Kostas Karamanlis. Oh, ye gods!
But then again, why not? After all, most of the statues erected in Greece deserve to be torn down and thrown into a landfill.
