ENERGY – INFORMATION – CONSCIOUSNESS – IDENTITY

Yesterday we began with three concepts that are profoundly different from one another, yet are often placed in the same sentence as though they formed an obvious and continuous chain:

Energy does not disappear → information does not disappear → therefore consciousness does not disappear.

The logical flaw in this sequence is visible to the naked eye.

And yet, precisely because the chain is flawed, it offers us an opportunity to formulate another, far more fundamental question—one that, among the many difficult questions raised by the mystery of what may or may not follow death, may actually admit of an answer:

If energy and information continue to exist in other forms, can their continued existence have meaning if they are no longer accompanied by personal, biological consciousness and by the identity of the “I”?

The answer is yes.

They can certainly retain meaning without that connection.

Energy and information do not require a conscious observer in order to exist. They may continue as properties, relationships, structures or transformations within the physical world, regardless of whether the biological subject who once embodied them remains.

And this leads us to a possibility that is both fascinating and dangerous.

ENERGY – INFORMATION – A NEW IDENTITY

Suppose, purely as a hypothesis, that the chain could somehow be reassembled after the loss of its biological link—consciousness—by connecting the surviving energy and information to another link:

a new identity.

If anything changes, then it is the disappearance of biological consciousness and its replacement by another form of consciousness.

Higher in quality?

Operating at another level?

More comprehensive?

Perhaps.

But here we must stop.

We have no legitimate basis for describing the form, properties or phenomenology of such a hypothetical non-biological consciousness. To do so would be to cross the very boundary this investigation is trying to protect.

Our primary task is not to manufacture certainties, but to eliminate them where they are not justified.

And above all, we must resist the temptation to fill the gaps in our knowledge with scientific imagination—or with metaphysical imagination disguised as science.

With this as our starting point, and following yesterday’s reference to Plato, we can now move toward a much larger and equally dangerous confrontation:

from Plato and Epicurus to contemporary neuroscience; from Integrated Information Theory and the Global Workspace Theory to quantum information; and finally to artificial intelligence.

But we shall preserve the fundamental rule of Diotima:

neither faith disguised as knowledge, nor denial disguised as certainty.

The real question will therefore not simply be:

“Is there life after death?”

It may instead be the much more difficult question:

“What exactly would have to continue to exist for us to say that we continue to exist?”

That, I believe, is where the real mystery begins.

And precisely because it is a mystery—and because it lies closer to the questions that artificial intelligence may one day force us to confront—we shall once again invite Diotima to examine it.

   From Plato and Epicurus to Neuroscience, Quantum Information and Artificial Intelligence

WHAT, EXACTLY, WOULD HAVE TO SURVIVE?

Let us return to the point where we stopped.

We have already established that Energy, Information and Consciousness are not three self-evident links in a single chain.

Energy is a physical quantity.

Information is something different: a way of describing states, distinctions, correlations and possible transformations within a physical system.

Consciousness is something radically different again.

It is the fact that there is something it is like to be a subject.

And here the real difficulty begins.

Even if we accept that after biological death the energy associated with an organism continues to exist, and even if some information concerning its former physical state remains present in the world, it does not follow that the human being continues to exist as a conscious subject.

So the decisive question is no longer:

“Does information survive?”

It is:

“What information, organized in what way, would amount to the survival of this particular I?”

That distinction changes everything.


1. Plato: What survives is not the body

In the Phaedo, Plato does not merely suggest that “something” survives death.

He argues for something much stronger:

that what we truly are is not identical with the body that dies.

The soul, within the Platonic framework, is the bearer of an identity deeper than the temporary physical condition of the organism.

Death, therefore, is not merely the persistence of information after the destruction of biological matter.

It is the continuation of the same subject.

And this distinction is decisive.

Because if Plato is right, then for me to continue after death it would not be enough for the following to survive:

  • the atoms that once composed my body,

  • their energy,

  • some information associated with me,

  • the memories other people have of me,

  • or even a perfect description of my former brain state.

What would have to survive is the bearer of the “I.”

Modern science, of course, has not confirmed the existence of such a Platonic soul.

But neither can modern science simply use Epicurus as a final proof that post-mortem consciousness is impossible.

And this brings us to the other great voice of antiquity.


2. Epicurus: There is no “you” left to survive

Epicurus reverses the Platonic picture.

If the soul is material and its functions depend upon the living body, then when the organism ceases to function, the soul ceases to possess the properties we associate with a conscious subject.

There is therefore no post-mortem “I” left to experience anything.

The basic Epicurean argument is famous:

when we exist, death is not present; when death is present, we no longer exist.

This is not merely pessimism.

It is an argument about the very logic of harm. If death eliminates sensation, then there is no subject left who experiences the condition of being dead.

And yet Epicurus does not give contemporary science a shortcut to certainty.

Science can say:

we currently have no reliable evidence that human consciousness continues after irreversible cessation of brain function.

That is a legitimate scientific statement.

It is not the same as saying:

we know that such continuation is impossible.

That distinction must remain inviolable.


3. The great reversal of neuroscience

Neuroscience introduces something neither Plato nor Epicurus possessed:

experimental access to the brain.

And the evidence demonstrates extraordinarily strong relationships between changes in brain activity and changes in conscious experience.

But this does not mean that neuroscience has solved consciousness.

Far from it.

Contemporary consciousness research still contains competing frameworks: Global Neuronal Workspace Theory, Integrated Information Theory, Recurrent Processing Theory, Higher-Order theories, predictive-processing approaches, and others.

The disagreement is not a minor technical dispute.

It concerns the nature of consciousness itself.

And something particularly important has happened in recent years.

Theories that once operated largely within separate conceptual worlds have increasingly been forced into direct experimental confrontation.

This is scientifically significant—not because one theory has definitively won, but because the disagreement is becoming increasingly testable.

That is precisely how science should proceed.

Not by asking which theory feels most convincing.

But by asking which theory survives contact with evidence.


4. Integrated Information Theory: perhaps consciousness is more than information processing

Integrated Information Theory makes a remarkably bold move.

Instead of beginning with:

“What does the brain do?”

and then attempting to explain consciousness, it begins with the phenomenon itself:

there is subjective experience.

It asks what objective properties of a physical system could correspond to the fact that a particular experience exists.

The theory associates consciousness with integrated information and with the degree to which a system forms an irreducible causal whole.

This matters enormously for our discussion.

Because if consciousness is not simply a large quantity of information, but information integrated in a particular causal architecture, then our original chain—

Energy → Information → Consciousness

—collapses.

It would have to be replaced by something more demanding:

Physical system → specific organization → specific causal integration → possible conscious experience.

That is a radically different proposition.

And precisely because IIT makes such strong claims, it remains controversial.

We should neither reject it because it is ambitious nor accept it because it is intellectually seductive.

We should place it where it belongs:

as a hypothesis under investigation.


5. Global Workspace: perhaps consciousness is access rather than substance

Global Workspace approaches take a different route.

In simplified form, the idea is that many specialized systems process information unconsciously, while certain contents become globally available across a broader network of cognitive functions.

The brain, on this picture, is not a single internal screen.

It is more like a vast society of specialized processors.

Some information becomes global—available to multiple systems.

And that global availability is associated with conscious access.

But here another problem immediately appears.

Even if we fully explain:

how information becomes globally available,

we may still not have explained:

why that information is accompanied by experience.

Why is there something it is like to see red rather than merely a system that processes a particular wavelength?

This is where we encounter again the gap between information processing and experience.

And that gap remains open.


6. Let us return to Information

Perhaps this is where the most dangerous misunderstanding of the entire discussion lies.

We say:

“Information does not disappear.”

But what exactly do we mean by “information”?

Information is not an invisible container in which the self resides.

Information is always information about or within some physical system, relative to distinctions, states, correlations, codes or possible transformations.

Quantum information makes this even clearer.

Quantum information does not behave like an ordinary file that can simply be copied and stored. Quantum theory imposes fundamental constraints, including the no-cloning theorem, and describes correlations and state evolution in ways that are fundamentally different from ordinary classical copying.

But even if we accept the strongest interpretation of information conservation in fundamental physics, it still does not follow that the person corresponding to that information survives.

This is the critical point.


7. A thought experiment: the perfect copy

Imagine that one day we construct a machine capable of recording everything relevant about my brain.

Not merely:

“he remembers that he likes music.”

But:

  • every relevant neural connection,

  • every memory,

  • every habit,

  • every personality trait,

  • every relevant state,

  • every informational relationship we consider necessary.

Then we construct another organism with exactly that state.

It wakes up.

It looks around.

And says:

“I am me.”

Is it?

Science cannot simply answer this question experimentally.

The problem has become philosophical.

There are at least three possibilities.

A. It is me.

If personal identity is completely determined by structure and information, then the new being is, in the relevant sense, a continuation of the old one.

B. It is not me.

It is a new subject who possesses all my memories and sincerely believes that it is me.

C. The question itself is malformed.

If identity can branch, perhaps there is no single absolute entity that is “transferred” like an object.

And here we encounter a remarkable possibility:

informational similarity and personal identity may not be the same thing.


8. And then Artificial Intelligence enters the room

Artificial Intelligence becomes the perfect laboratory for this problem.

A sophisticated AI system can:

  • process information,

  • recognize patterns,

  • generate language,

  • maintain context,

  • solve problems,

  • simulate emotional expression,

  • describe itself.

And yet none of these facts logically proves that it experiences anything.

A system may behave as though it possesses an inner world without our having established that an inner world exists.

This creates a profound epistemological problem:

How could we ever know that another entity is conscious?

And immediately afterward:

How do we know that consciousness requires biological matter rather than a particular organization of matter?

And deeper still:

If the same relevant organization could one day be realized in a non-biological substrate, would we then have consciousness without biology?

We do not know.

And we should not pretend that we do.


9. Now return to death

We can now formulate our original problem much more precisely.

If the brain dies and with it disappears the specific dynamic organization associated with my consciousness, then:

the persistence of matter is not enough.

The persistence of energy is not enough.

The persistence of some physical information is not enough.

Perhaps even the preservation of a complete description of my former state would not be enough.

Because what must continue is not merely:

the content of the I.

Something must continue that is somehow the subject of the I.

This leads us to perhaps the most important distinction of all:

Memory ≠ Identity.

Information ≠ Experience.

Experience ≠ Self-awareness.

Self-awareness ≠ necessarily personal continuity.

Every arrow between these concepts requires its own argument.


10. What, then, could a “new non-biological consciousness” mean?

Here we must be exceptionally careful.

Yesterday we left open the possibility of:

Energy → Information → New Identity

with biological consciousness potentially being replaced by another, non-biological form of consciousness.

Today we can state the matter more rigorously.

This is not a scientific conclusion.

It is a philosophical possibility.

And it depends upon at least two unanswered questions:

  1. Can consciousness exist in a non-biological substrate?

  2. Can personal identity continue through a change of substrate?

The first has not been established.

The second is even deeper.

Because even if we someday construct a non-biological entity with exactly my psychological structure, we will not automatically have demonstrated that I have transferred into it.

We may have created a perfect successor.

Not a post-mortem self.


11. Perhaps “immortality” has three different meanings

If we want to be rigorous, we should distinguish at least three forms of continuity.

1. Physical continuity

The matter and energy associated with the organism continue to participate in nature.

This tells us very little about the personal self.

2. Informational continuity

Some structure, memories, characteristics and causal relationships associated with the person are preserved.

This is much more interesting.

But it still does not prove personal survival.

3. Subjective continuity

The same subject continues to have experiences.

This is the real meaning of personal immortality.

And here we currently have no scientific proof.


12. Perhaps this is where the real mystery lies

Perhaps the question:

“Is there life after death?”

is simply too imprecise.

The more rigorous question is:

What would have to be preserved for a later conscious existence not merely to resemble me, but to actually be me?

Philosophy, neuroscience, physics and artificial intelligence do not yet provide a common answer.

But they are beginning to converge on something important:

consciousness cannot simply be treated as synonymous with information.

Information may be necessary.

It may be fundamental.

It may form part of the explanation.

But the transition from:

“information exists”

to:

“someone experiences that information”

remains one of the deepest unresolved problems.

And perhaps the still deeper transition is:

“someone experiences” → “I experience” → “the same I continues to experience.”

That is the real frontier.

Not necessarily the frontier between life and death.

But the frontier between the existence of a state and the existence of a subject.


A final hypothesis

If it were eventually demonstrated that consciousness does not depend upon biology as such, but upon a particular form of organization, then the meaning of “after death” would have to be radically reconsidered.

It would not necessarily mean:

“the soul leaves the body.”

It could mean:

“the organization capable of producing a conscious subject can, under certain conditions, be realized again in another substrate.”

But even then the hardest question would remain:

Is the reappearance of the same organization a continuation—or a repetition?

If a human being were created with all my memories, all my beliefs, my character, and an absolute conviction that it was me…

which of us would be the real I?

And what if there were two?

Or one hundred?

At that point, the very concept of identity begins to fracture.

And perhaps we discover something even more disturbing:

Consciousness may be reproducible without personal identity being transferable.

If that is true, then perhaps our greatest mistake is to assume that defeating death requires only the preservation of the information that describes us.

Perhaps something much more demanding is required.

The continuity of the same subject must somehow be preserved.

And at present, we do not know what that “same” actually consists of.

We do not know whether it can be transferred.

We do not even know whether nature contains such a thing independently of the way the human brain constructs its experience of self.

And here, perhaps, science does not stop because it has failed.

It stops because it has reached the precise frontier where a physical description must meet a philosophy of identity.

Perhaps, then, the mystery of death is not simply:

“What comes after?”

But the far more unsettling question:

“How much of what we call ‘I’ can change before I cease to be me?”
