The History That Was Never Lost
For the greater part of its existence, humanity’s history remains unknown to us.
We have no sources.
We have no records.
We have no evidence.
And even where records do exist, we do not necessarily have the truth.
Because History was not written by the past itself.
It was written by human beings.
And the person who records an event has already chosen what to see, what to remember, what to omit and what to pass on to those who come after.
Thus, what we call “History” is, in reality, a vast mosaic made of fragments.
A broken mirror.
And within it, we try to recognize ourselves.
From the very beginning of Homo-Naturalis, we have insisted on an idea that, at the time, may have sounded more like science fiction than a serious question:
Could there one day be a way to open the Archive of the Universe?
Could there be a way for Nature itself to return to us what we have lost?
What was destroyed.
What was silenced.
What was distorted.
What no one ever recorded.
What If Nothing Was Truly Lost?
Here lies the great hypothesis.
We consider something lost because we can no longer see it.
But does the fact that we cannot retrieve something necessarily mean that it has ceased to exist as information?
Modern physics has confronted one of its strangest and most fascinating problems:
the black-hole information paradox.
What happens to the information describing something when that something falls into a black hole?
Is it lost?
Or does it remain somewhere, in a form that we simply do not yet know how to read?
The debate, in which Stephen Hawking played a decisive role, is not merely about black holes.
It concerns something far deeper.
Does Nature itself forget?
And if Nature does not forget?
Then perhaps History has not been lost.
Perhaps it is simply locked away.
The Universe as Memory
Let us dare, then, to take the thought one step further.
Not as an established scientific fact.
As a hypothesis.
As a philosophical question waiting for science.
What if the Universe is a vast memory?
Not a literal “supercomputer.”
Not a metaphysical hard drive.
But a physical system in which every event leaves traces, and in which information may not disappear as easily as we imagine.
Then what would this mean for History?
Something extraordinary.
It would mean that one day, if science acquires the ability to detect and decode those traces, the past might cease to be merely an interpretation.
It could become retrievable data.
Then the Historian Will Face the Impossible
Today, historians work with what survived.
A manuscript.
An inscription.
A coin.
A ruin.
A testimony.
A photograph.
An archive.
And then they attempt to assemble the fragments.
But there is a fundamental problem:
If a piece is gone, no historian can recreate it without ceasing to be a historian.
That is why we say that today we look at the past through a broken mirror.
And no matter how honest the person holding those fragments may be, he cannot create what is no longer there.
But what happens if, one day, we learn how to “read” the Universe itself?
Then we would no longer have only the testimonies of human beings.
We might have the physical traces of the events themselves.
And then History would have to be rewritten.
Not because the past would change.
But because our knowledge of the past would change.
That distinction is fundamental.
Recovering information does not alter the event.
It makes the event visible.
And What About the Human Being?
Here the question becomes far more personal.
If information about events is preserved, what happens to the human being?
Could the individual informational imprint also survive?
The actions.
The words.
The choices.
The thoughts understood as physical processes.
The consequences produced by one’s presence in the world.
Not, of course, as a “personal CD” hidden somewhere in space.
But as part of the chain of physical events that occurred because that particular human being existed.
And here the truly paradoxical question begins.
Let us imagine that, in some distant future, an extraordinarily advanced science and artificial intelligence acquire the ability to retrieve and reconstruct this information.
What would they have before them?
A human being?
Or the work of a human being?
They might have the voice.
The face.
The movements.
The decisions.
The words.
The history.
But would they also have the Self?
Here Science Must Fall Silent
And here we must be strict.
We cannot call something science merely because we want it to be true.
The conservation of energy does not prove an afterlife.
The preservation of information does not prove the preservation of consciousness.
Theories of parallel universes do not prove that human beings migrate to another universe after death.
And contemporary physics has not given us an answer to the question of whether the Self, as subjective consciousness, can survive biological death.
This must be said clearly.
Because otherwise we would be doing precisely what we accuse religions of having done for centuries:
filling the gaps in knowledge with certainties.
We have no such certainties.
We have questions.
And perhaps questions are far more interesting.
What, Then, Is “Immortality”?
If one day the entire informational imprint of a human being could be preserved, could we say that this person had become immortal?
Perhaps.
But only in a different sense.
Not because he continues to live.
But because he continues to exist as information.
And that distinction is enormous.
A human life may survive as history without the human being surviving as consciousness.
The work may remain without the creator.
The imprint may remain without the subject who left it.
And then the hardest question emerges:
Is immortality without consciousness really immortality?
Or is it simply the eternal life of information?
Mind and Imagination
We have written many times that one of Nature’s greatest gifts to humanity is the Mind.
The second is Imagination.
The Mind sees what exists.
Imagination dares to see what does not yet exist.
A prehistoric human being, trapped inside a cave during a freezing winter, had no air-conditioning.
But he had the ability to imagine it.
And this may be one of the most extraordinary characteristics of humanity:
again and again, the reality of the future surpasses the imagination of the past.
What we consider impossible today may become technology tomorrow.
Not because every act of imagination becomes reality.
But because every great expansion of reality begins with someone who first dared to imagine it.
The Great Archive
And so we return to our starting point.
Perhaps one day science will be able to open an Archive far greater than all human archives.
The Archive of the Universe itself.
If that happens, History will not change.
Our knowledge of History will change.
Lost pages may be recovered.
Events may be illuminated.
Myths may collapse.
Distortions may be exposed.
Unknown human beings may regain their place in historical memory.
And perhaps, alongside human History, another file will open:
the file of cosmic History itself.
How did the Universe begin?
How did it evolve?
What existed before everything we can observe today?
What is time?
Does it truly exist as a fundamental entity, or is it partly a way in which our brains organize events?
And ultimately:
Why is there something rather than nothing?
These are questions that even the most advanced physics has not closed once and for all.
And Then What Becomes of the Gods?
If science one day succeeds in providing natural explanations for the great cosmological questions that religions monopolized for millennia, something humanity has already begun to experience will become even more evident:
The explanation of Nature will no longer require recourse to the supernatural.
It will not be the first time.
Every time a natural phenomenon is explained, another territory once occupied by myth passes into the realm of knowledge.
And perhaps this is the deepest defeat of every anthropomorphic god:
not that someone fights him, but that we cease to need him as an explanation.
Human beings no longer need Zeus to explain lightning.
They no longer need a god to explain the motion of the planets.
And perhaps, one day, they will no longer need a creator to explain creation.
But that, too, remains a question.
Not a final answer.
The Final Paradox
Perhaps, then, immortality is much closer to us than we imagine.
Not as eternal life.
But as eternal information.
The human being dies.
The work may remain.
The body disintegrates.
The consequences of one’s actions may continue to exist.
The voice falls silent.
But its traces may remain part of reality.
And if, one day, we learn how to read those traces?
Perhaps we will discover that humanity was never as “lost” as it believed.
Or perhaps we will discover something much harsher:
That everything was preserved except the one who lived it.
And then we will have to decide what we truly mean when we say:
IMMORTALITY.
Tomorrow, Diotima
Tomorrow, Diotima will take the baton.
Not to offer us yet another myth.
Nor to construct a new religion from the materials of modern physics.
But to stand precisely where certainty ends and the question begins.
Because if there is one definitive answer we can give today, it is this:
There are still no definitive answers.
And perhaps that is the most fascinating thing we know.
