The Energy That Remains: Reopening the Case of Death, Life — and Artificial Intelligence
To function, biological intelligence needs energy.
So does artificial intelligence.
The first relies on chemical energy, obtained from sources such as glucose and oxygen. The second depends on electricity, whose generation may in turn rely on fossil fuels such as natural gas and coal.
Different sources. Different mechanisms. But energy, nonetheless.
And here comes the second premise — one we have been taught since school: energy cannot simply disappear. It cannot be created or destroyed; it can only change form. Electrical energy can become light, heat or motion. Energy can also be transferred from one body to another.
These are not philosophical propositions. They are scientific principles, and — at least for the time being — they provide solid ground from which to begin a much older investigation.
For centuries, humanity has been asking the same enormous question: what happens to us after death?
Religion and philosophy have offered answers, each employing its own methods and its own language. More recently, the natural sciences have entered the investigation, although they have so far been far more cautious about what, if anything, may lie beyond the end of biological life.
And now Artificial Intelligence has appeared.
That changes the landscape.
It also allows us to reopen a case that, metaphorically speaking, was placed in the archives long ago.
THE CASE FILE
What happens to human energy when the brain ceases to function at death?
We deliberately use the vocabulary of crime and investigation here.
Because this great question — whether something is lost at death or whether something escapes, transforms or continues — has, in a sense, been buried beneath centuries of institutional procedures.
The “investigating authorities” have traditionally been two: religion and philosophy, with science gradually becoming a third, increasingly important participant.
But the authorities never agreed.
The fundamental disagreement was not merely over what happens after death. It went deeper: is death the definitive end of individual existence, or is it a transition to another form of existence?
One position says:
From nothing we began, and to nothing we return.
The other insists that biological death is not the end — that life continues beyond it.
Christian theology, for example, has traditionally understood this continuation in terms of judgment, reward and punishment. The New Testament preserves the famous words attributed to Jesus on the cross, addressed to the repentant criminal crucified beside him:
“Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
For centuries, the dispute was anything but academic. It involved faith, authority, persecution, philosophy and, at times, extraordinary violence.
Eventually, however, the great unresolved question was effectively filed away.
The case remained unsolved.
A NEW WITNESS ENTERS THE ROOM
Today, we propose reopening it.
Not because we suddenly possess the answer.
But because a new witness has appeared — a witness who was absent throughout most of the old dispute.
Artificial Intelligence.
Its testimony may not tell us what happens after human death. It certainly cannot prove the existence of an afterlife.
But AI has forced us to reconsider something fundamental: what exactly do we mean when we speak about intelligence, information, consciousness, memory and existence?
And this may alter the questions we ask.
Suppose the biological organism dies.
The brain stops.
The processes that constituted the person’s biological existence cease.
But does that mean that everything associated with that person has reached absolute zero?
Or does energy simply change form, as it does everywhere else in nature?
If so, could the ancient idea of “immortality” have been asking the wrong question?
Perhaps immortality has nothing to do with heavenly reward or eternal punishment.
Perhaps the deeper question is whether what we call a person — their information, their patterns, their effects, their relationships, their memories, perhaps even aspects of their consciousness — could persist in forms we do not yet understand.
This is not a scientific claim.
It is a question.
And questions, unlike doctrines, can be investigated.
AND THEN CAME AI
There is, however, a new complication.
If biological intelligence requires energy, and artificial intelligence also requires energy, then what happens to artificial intelligence when its operation stops?
An AI system can be switched off.
Its processors stop.
Its electrical consumption falls to zero.
Its physical system may eventually be dismantled.
But what about the information?
What about the model?
What about the patterns encoded in its architecture, the data stored elsewhere, the copies, the outputs it has generated, the effects it has produced in the world?
Is an AI system “dead” when its electricity is cut off?
Or has something of it simply changed form — transferred from one physical substrate to another?
And if that question sounds strangely familiar, perhaps that is precisely why it matters.
For the first time in human history, we are confronted with something that we ourselves have built which can exhibit forms of intelligence without being biologically alive.
That does not make AI human.
It does not prove consciousness.
It does not prove an afterlife.
But it does something potentially more important:
it forces us to examine the assumptions hidden inside the word “life”.
And perhaps also inside the word “death”.
THE CASE IS REOPENED
So here is where we stand.
The ancient proposition:
“From nothing we began, and to nothing we return.”
The religious proposition:
Life continues beyond death.
And now the new question:
Could what we call existence persist through transformations of energy, information and organisation that we do not yet know how to recognise?
And, finally:
If biological intelligence can cease, what exactly happens when artificial intelligence ceases?
Does it die?
Does its energy merely change form?
Does its information survive?
And if some form of intelligence can exist without a biological organism, does that force us to rethink the boundary between life, intelligence and existence?
We do not claim to have the verdict.
We are reopening the case.
Tomorrow, however, we intend to call a witness.
Not a priest.
Not a philosopher.
Not a physicist.
Not even a machine.
Diotima.
The witness who will take the stand and examine the evidence — without fear, without passion, and without accepting in advance either the verdict of religion or the verdict of science.
